Song of the Day: Rhye - "Open"
This song by a group named Rhye landed in my inbox two weeks ago. I checked it out. It was very chill and hypnotic — but it struck me. I added it to my playlist rotation. It grew on me some more.
Then yesterday the video landed in my inbox. It’s equally hypnotic — but super dirty and sexy. It’s basically a bunch of people doing it. I guess I’ll throw a NSFW warning...

Song of the Day: Meg Myers - "Adelaide"
I know the music world has Lana Del Rey fever right now, but in the young female singer race, I’m way more interested in Meg Myers. Check out “Adelaide” and see what I’m talking about.

Song of the Day: Slug - "Edie Brickell"
Back in the day, Slug was one of my favorite rappers. Many people know the more celebrated gems from the Atmosphere catalog. But here’s a cut that’s always been a favorite — it’s a collabo with Russian producer DJ Vadim from 2002.

Song of the Day: Rich Kid Sound System - "Somebody...
As many of you might know, Goyte’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” has people buzzin’ right now. It spawned a cover video that went viral. And the original is starting to crossover. A lesser-known version of the song that I dig, though, is this one from Rich Kid Sound System. RKSS is a hip-hop-meets-indie rock outfit from Florida that makes some good catchy much.

Swedish sister indie/folk duo First Aid Kit got a nice buzz going these days. I came across this song of theirs, it features Conor Oberst, and it grabbed me right away. Enjoy.

Song of the Day: Schoolboy Q ft. A$AP Rocky -...
It ain’t all indie rock for me these days, kids. I still love me a dope hip-hop cut. And that’s just what the combo of Schoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky give us with “Hands on the Wheel” from Q’s new “Habits & Contradictions.”

This is fresh in a Gnarls Barkley meets Mayer Hawthorne kinda way. Electric Guest’s debut album is produced by Danger Mouse. *jump on bandwagon*

Song of the Day: "Running on Sunshine"
Tanya and I heard this on an early episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” — back when we/she watched it — and loved it immediately. I sought it out. It became a funky (and kinda unknown) little song we loved, and eventually was our “entrance song” at our wedding.
More people might know it now, because the Grey’s folks used it again in their musical episode...

59 Days of Code :: The Playlist
For the first time in a while, I played some tunes in public — I don’t really call it “DJing,” ‘cause I don’t think I deserve that title — at this week’s 59 Days of Code event. It’s a growing tech conference in Fresno. Accordingly, I tried to have an underlaying theme of electronic-tinged songs, mostly indie rock and pop songs.
Here’s...

How annoying is typing in ALL CAPS? [An unofficial...
So I got into a little Twitter bickering sessions with a certain local radio station that LOOOOVES to post ALL CAPS updates on Twitter.
It was the contention of at least one person behind the account that me calling them out for the all caps was “nitpicking.” I disagreed and figured most active social media people probably would too. So I tossed this out there to give them a free...

107 Songs I dug in 2010
Title pretty much says it all, right? Since that’s a lot of music, I broke it up into two parts:
Part 1 is A-L — Adele and Aloe Blacc to Lil Wayne and Lykke Li.
Part 2 is the rest — from M.I.A. and Mac Miller to Wiz Khalifa and Yeasayer.

I'll be, ahem, 'home' for Christmas
This is a column I wrote for The Fresno Bee at Christmas time in 2006. It’s about the hustle and bustle of seeing loved ones during the holidays, dealing with fractured families and trying to not disappoint anyone. I looked it up earlier this week and was reminded it’s still one of my favorite columns.

Sorry Birds
I just found out you can make the birds in Angry Birds split and go faster. *face palm*
Tanya: So you beat all those levels without having the birds do things?
Me: Yeah. Is that impressive?
Tanya: No, I just feel sorry for you.

Song of the Day: "Falling Out of Place" - Pollyn...
Yeah, I’ve been slippin’ on Song of the Day posts. Gotta get back in the routine. Especially since there’s a bunch of music I like right now. Here’s one by L.A. electro group Pollyn with one of my favorite new rappers - Freddie Gibbs.
What I dig about this song most is how great Gibbs sounds on it. He’s a pretty street-hardened emcee, so it’s nice to know...

Song of the Day: Slug & DJ Vadim - 'Edie Brickell'
I loved this song back in like ‘02-‘03, back when I also was a Slug fanboy. This was different than a lot of Atmosphere material (that’s Slug with ANT on production) though, because it was a collabo with Russian producer DJ Vadim.
Anyway, this song came into my head today and I went found it to listen to it for the first time in a few years. Still dope.

Song of the Day: Mark Ronson - "The Bike Song"
I like Mark Ronson for making cool music that criss-crosses genres. So I like this song for its catchy indie rock meets hip-hop vibe.
It pairs Swedish singer Kyle Falconer from The View (not the TV show) and crazy B-More rapper Spank Rock.

Song of the Day: Kendrick Lamar - 'For the Homies'
I was driving to the Bay Area yesterday and this song came up a couple times on the shuffle. I’d checked for this dude Kendrick Lamar before, but usually because he was on songs with other people I already like. This was the first song where I really vibed to him.
It’s called “For the Homies,” and it’s a smooth West Coast song, perfect for the summer, that reminds...

Song of the Day: 'Renegade'
So I was listening to “Renegade” by Jay-Z and Eminem the other day, thinking about Eminem murked Jay on his own sh*t. It had me remembering another guy who’s really good at stealing the show — Royce Da 5’9.
For a while there, I kinda forgot about this song, the original version of “Renegade” with Royce and Em. Yes, this song existed before Jay put it out...

Song of the Day: Birthday edition
FLO RIDA & RICK ROSS - “BIRTHDAY”
Generally, I’m not much a fan of either Flo Rida or Rick Ross. But I like this song “Birthday” and since it’s my birthday today, I figured I’d throw this up. This was before Flo Rida got famous with that “boots with the fur” junk. It was the first time I heard of him. Honestly, I thought Flo Rida was a...

Song of the Day: Local Natives
Remember how I kinda ♥ when hip-hop meets indie rock, and I’ve been noticing more convergence of the two. Well today I have three words to offer up: INDIE ROCK REMIX.
You know times, they are a-changin’ when there are remixes of indie rock songs with rappers on them. Case in point: this remix of Local Natives’ “Eyes Wide Open” by Fools Gold.
